The Gathering (Shadow House) by Dan Poblocki
The book I'm reading is The Gathering from the Shadow House series by Dan Poblocki. The book is about these five kids: Poppy, Marcus, Azumi, Dash, and Dylan who are all going to the same house simultaneously. Dash and Dylan was invited to do a horror movie. Poppy was sent a letter from her Great-Aunt Delphinia, telling her that she was welcome to live at the Larkspur House. Azumi was looking for boarding schools and Larkspur house showed up. Marcus was invited to a music school for his great musical performances. When they arrived to the house, they all met each other and then began to look around the house. Everyone keeps seeing strange figures wearing masks, Poppy notices the little bird marked on the house, Azumi keeps re-seeing her sister disappear, Dylan's head keeps hurting, Dash gets attacked by a rabbit-masked boy, and Marcus can't stop hearing the music inside his head. All the children finally start to realize that the house is evil.
I could connect my book with kidnappings that go on nowadays. The Newsela article I read talked about how a group of girls were finally reunited with their families after being kept away for three years. In the book, the 5 children are given emails or reasons telling them to go to Larkspur House. This house is completely random and has no proof of being legit. This house is almost like kidnapping these kids because they don't know the adult or the house. The house is totally random and kids shouldn't just trust that it's safe. The book can definitely connect to situations that go on today. We can only hope that the children make it out alive.
This book is really different. I like how the house is alive and trying to get the children. The masked children also make the story more engaging. What was very mysterious was when the house perfectly picked the children. During the story, all I wonder about is who is in control of this shadow house. I hope that Poppy and Dylan become more of friends and open up more. My least favorite character is Azumi because she doesn't click with any of the other characters and she won't open up a lot about her crazy nightmares. This Shadow House story is extremely spooky and I loved reading about this evil house.
