Text to World: Counting Thyme

I am reading Counting Thyme by Melanie Conklin and this story is about a girl named Thyme who has to move all the way from San Diego to New York because her little brother, Val has cancer. New York has all the medication and things her little brother needs, but New York does not fit her needs. Thyme just wants to back home to her grandmother and her best friend, but she knows she needs to be there for her brother. Thyme has to go to a new school with new friends, but her new friends are not very nice, so she hides the real fact she is in New York. Her family starts to break apart and starts to keep secrets from each other. See how Thyme's life changes and gets better by reading Counting Thyme by Melanie Conklin.

The problem in the story is similar to a situation in our own world. A boy named Peter had cancer when he was 12 years old and battled through it. Peter now volunteers in hospitals and raises money to donate wheelchairs to local hospitals. This connects with my book because Thyme's little brother has cancer and their family is always trying to help out hospitals and the people who have cancer, just like Peter does.

I noticed that the more Thyme's little brother got sick, the family seemed to come together more. Thyme's family started to appreciate each other and cherish every moment they have with the youngest in the family. The story teaches it is important when times get hard, stick with your family and be nice to one another. I was surprised that Thyme didn't tell her friends that she was in New York for her brother because it seems that her fiends would be understanding that her little brother has cancer
