Text to World: By Amelia Thoele, The Giver
I am reading the book The Giver by Lois Lowry. The Giver is about a community and they all have jobs or groups that are given to them by the elders. The elders are these older people who observe you and choose a job for you based on what they've seen throughout the years. You get a job assigned to you when you become a twelve. People are put into groups based on how old they are like there is. Jonas, the main character, is curious on what his assignment is going to be until finally the day of the ceremony comes. After Fiona goes and it's finally his turn... they skip his number. They went from 18 to 20. He sat there dazed, he couldn't believe what was happening, how disappointed his parents must be, how humiliated he was. He kept bouncing his knee up and down, looking around the room, he tried paying attention but he just couldn't knowing that he might not have a job. Until the end of the ceremony arrived and the elder apologized, she said she made a mistake and she finally calls him up to the stage. When Jonas get's to the stage the elder says he has the most important assignment of all. The most honored assignment, The receiver. The receiver contains all the memories, the good, the bad, the painful, the sad so the community doesn't have to bear all the pain.
This book relates to the world because there is so many labels, like food labels, kids get labeled in school for what they wear or what they do, you get the point, but this is just like in the book because you get jobs based on who you are. For example Jonas got his job because the chief elder thought he was very brave, and he would make a good fit for the job, and he was. This book also relates to the world because children go to school and have recess, and live normal lives, and then they grow up, get jobs and find out how hard it can get in real life. For example Jonas learns about pain, happiness, love, loneliness, and more and in the world people have to deal with these things all the time.
I felt sad when Jonas ran away from the community with Gabriel, because he said he was weak and tired and cold, and he wasn't getting through, but then near the end of the book when he found the special place that had light and music I was happy because he was safe now and he had Gabriel with him. I love the way the author ended the book, because near the end it was very sad and it made you want to read more to see if they made it or not and you kind of asked questions like are they safe, are they going to survive, and stuff like that. I also love the ending because it was a happy ending, Jonas was with Gabriel and they made it, and I thought it was incredible how the author described what Jonas felt when he made it and kind of what it looked like, and I am still wondering is the place he is now called beyond?
