Text to Text: Small as an Elephant

I am reading Small as an Elephant by Jennifer Richard Jacobson and this story is about a boy named Jack and he wakes up on first day of vacation and is mom is gone. The car, the tent, everything is gone. He knows it is up to him to find her, but he needs to find her before people find out he is alone. He goes on long journeys to find his mother but will he forgive her? She left him all by himself and the only thing to keep him company is a small plastic elephant. When he is found he is afraid he will be taken away from his mother. He meets some unexpected friends along the way and before he is found he just wants to see the elephant back in Boston named Lydia, but will he make it before someone turns him in?

This book reminds me of the book The Outsiders because just like how Jack was left all alone by his mother, Johnny is payed little attention by his parents and they do not care for Johnny in The Outsiders. These books connect because both boys are ignored or left by their parents and they find some friends or an object to keep them company. This causes both of the boys to act out and change in their personality. For example, Jack starts to steal things and runs away from people that are trying to help him. Johnny, on the other hand kills one of his biggest rivals. Both of these characters change in some way just from their parents leaving them or ignoring them.

At the beginning of the story I started to think the mom was kidnapped and that was why Jack could not find her. Then. I started to think that Jack's mom really did leave Jack on purpose. I was surprised that Jack did not want to be found by people and just wanted to travel home by himself with no worries. I like this writing because it connects to the reader and a very interesting story on how a boy makes a living for himself when his mom leaves him.
