Text to Text - Out of my Mind
I finished Out of my Mind by Sharon Draper. Out of my Mind, by Sharon Draper, is a story about a young girl named Melody Brooks who has cerebral palsy, which affects her body movement, muscle control, muscle coordination, muscle tone, reflex, posture, balance, and many more. She is not only different from all the other fifth graders because of her condition, but because of her intelligence. Melody is really smart but is often misjudged because of how she looks and because she can't do most things on her own. Her school then starts a program called Inclusion Classes which allow her to interact with students her age.
In Out of my Mind, Melody is always saying that she feels like she is trapped in a cage. This reminds me of a scene in Everything, Everything by Nicola Yoon because the main character Madeline has a disease where she can't go outside, so she doesn't have a lot of interaction with other people. Melody has a communication board and she eventually gets a MediTalker, so she can talk to other people. Madeline has a computer and phone so she has her online friends on this book review website.
The characters I most admire are Melody's parents, Ms. V., and Catherine because they all help Melody connect with other people and do all the things she never thought she could do. I know it is probably not easy helping Melody because she can't do a lot of things on her own and because she sometimes throws tantrums. They all also stay brave, especially when Melody gets a lot of weird looks and when these two girls are always making fun of her.
